We All Have an Unknown Ability, Destined to Remain Unknown

Uagadou is the Ugandan wizarding school, located in the Mountains of the Moon in western Uganda. It is the largest of the eleven wizarding schools, accepting students from all over Africa. Visitors to the school speak of a stunning edifice carved out of the mountainside and shrouded in mist, so that it sometimes appears simply to float in mid-air.

We All Have an Unknown Ability, Destined to Remain Unknown

When he was a boy, a lion came to him in a dream, and even in that dream, the lion did not speak because it was still only a great cat. It lowered its head and Mulekwa climbed to sit across its broad shoulders with his fingers tangled in its mane. The lion bounded forward across the plains, and when he woke, he had a tuft of thick fur clenched in his fingers.

He wove that tuft into a band and wore it around his neck as a charm, and since that moment, the great cats of the world had always drawn his fascination, and he theirs. He lived when he could among them, roaming barefoot and untouched, and played with the cubs under their mothers' watchful eyes, and when he was older and could travel he sought out those in far away lands: the tigers of India, the cougars of America, and once a spotted and shy jaguar in Brazil.

When he was a teen it was standard in Uagadou (and still is) to take on the form of an animal. All students mastered at least one, and though this practice was considered difficult and uncommon in other parts of the world, the people around him never had this problem. Maybe their magic was different, somehow, or maybe there was a truth behind the animals their tribes worshiped. This practice, Mulekwa learned, was not to become a true Animagi, but instead that of self-transfiguration; in the end, it made no real difference to them. Animagi did not require a wand, which was the core reason some sought to practice it, but those in Uagadou did not use wands anyway, or if they did they did so rarely. Mulekwa never touched one, and his chosen form of transformation for his end of the term test was a great elephant.

He never tried to turn into any of the cats he loved and worshiped. Perhaps he was afraid the form would reject him. Perhaps he found it sacrilegious. There was little Mulekwa would not face, but he could not bear the thought of that.

Now he was back, after years of studying and travel. He had been teaching a year, waiting for the one whose marriage had been arranged to him since their childhood. They had mutually and without discussing it avoided the topic with an expertise that lasted until their 40s, when their clans had finally put their feet down. Now Mulekwa walked the misty paths around the school's grounds, and waited, knowing that today he would see Ochen for the first time since they themselves had attended school.

She dreamed sometimes of a magnificent beast and every time it was the same. She came from the mists that rolled down off the Rwenzori mountains and her mane was soaked with the ancient dew of her highest precipice. Her eyes glittered like sapphires from the dark and her gnarled horns curved toward the heavens. Before Ochen could ever react, and she never could- frozen to the place in pure reverence- the beast drew up to her hind legs and from her shoulders sprouted two breathtaking wings of pure black, speckled with the stars of old in formations that Ochen had never seen before. She took flight, leaving Ochen in her dazzling wake.

Of course, the actual Abada had no wings and when she first told this to her mother as a child, both she and Ochen's twin brother had hushed her for her nonsense. But she decided there, before realizing how often that winged creature would visit her, that she would sprout her own wings.

Ochen had spent her life being cast along the current of life. From one destination to the next, she followed her heart and the small whispers in her hear saying, go! go! stretch your legs! be free! Despite her determination to fly, there was a time when she had looked upon those who, like the baobab tree, had deep roots that stretched back through time, connecting them to magic from eons past- still with their patience and longevity, and she had envied them. It had taken her two years in one place, until she had memorized the curve of the walking path she took to the clinic every day and the exact place that a shadow would fall upon sunset, for her to realize that her magic would not come from roots.

So she pulled hers up and she moved on.

Now, though, she was moving back. It was an event that she had always known would come to pass but now that she stared down the truth of it, somehow it was difficult to digest. Ochen knew it was no mistake that they had both found ways to avoid this until now, and that gave her some solace at least.

Her clan had rattled their horns loudly enough that she could no longer ignore them and the position of Healing Professor had been offered to her, she could no longer deny her destiny, as frightfully stationary as it appeared to be.

Ochen arrived at the school on the wings of a starling.

They met on this path eventually. Mulekwa recognized her even though they had not seen each other in decades.

"Ochen!" He greeted, lifting a hand. He wore light robes in pretty designs of copper and ivory, and sandals. Mulekwa bore no ill will against his future wife, or he thought he didn't. He tried to keep the two separate, his feelings for the person and his feelings for the marriage.

Ochen wore a dress in deep purple and violet. She lifted a hand in a mirror of his greeting and tilted her head invitingly, "Mulekwa, it's been a long time." long enough for them to both have changed, not long enough for them not to recognize one another. Of course, their families had made certain of that.

"You've accepted a teaching position here?" He inquired as he came to a halt in front of her. He was tall and lean, and the lines in his face suggested that he rarely smiled. The question he already knew the answer to, of course (why else would she be here?), but small talk was not his forte.

Ochen, on the other hand, had lines drawn into her skin that evidenced her tenancy to smile frequently, if smally, "Yes. Healing." she tilted her head down the path to indicate they could continue to walk in the direction he'd been going, "It will take some time for me to settle in."

It was perhaps an excuse to avoid him further. "Yes, the environment here is unique."

She gave him a slight smile, "I remember it from school." she reminded him, "It will be different on the other side, though, teaching instead of learning."

"It is," he confirmed and fell silent. It felt like he should keep the conversation going, to get to know her, but he honestly didn't know what to say. Everything felt forced, because it was.

Ochen lapsed into silence too, aware from the few times they'd met and all their mutual acquaintances that she would probably bear most of the conversational burden, "We could share an evening meal." she offered after some quiet.

He sighed.

Yes. Sorry.

"Yes. I'm free tonight."

Her brows inched upward, "Or tomorrow if that is less of an inconvenience."

They were all inconvenient. Everything about this was an inconvenience.

"Tomorrow then. You'll be better settled in."

At least they could say he made a dramatic exit.

Mulekwa twisted on his heel, and with a pop, he was gone.
