Lateralus

Hogsmeade Village, or simply called Hogsmeade, is the only all-wizarding village in Britain. It was founded by Hengist of Woodcroft who was in Hufflepuff. Since before 1714 (when the 1714 Edict was passed), Hogwarts third years and above have been permitted weekend trips into the village.

Lateralus

Post by Simon Veler » Fri Oct 12, 2018 2:40 pm

A new arrival was slated to, well, you know, arrive today and as Qingying apparently knew (or at least of) the man he was asked to meet him in the village where he'd be apparating to later that day.

Dr. Simon Veler was an alumnus of Ilvermorny and a good friend of Haixiu, the professor who had been helping him with Patience's assistive technology. Much like Qingying, Simon had one foot firmly in the muggle community despite American magical restrictions due to being born in a primarily muggle family. As such, when he finally popped! into existence, he wore a grey cardigan, faded blue jeans and a dark blazer rather than wizard's robes.

"Mr. Euphemeria," he smiled at his escort warmly and extended a hand in greeting. "Haixiu sends his regards. How are you getting on?" he bit back a shiver in the chilly autumn air. "Fancy a butterbeer?" He tapped his black tote bag and withdrew a bottle of pre-packaged fare, a brand that Qingying may or may not be familiar with, since it was from the other side of the world (give or take), holding it out.

British magical education, compared to the education of certain other countries, communities, and schools, was… narrow in scope, in Qingying’s opinion. He’d included additional ‘muggle-related information’ in his classes and club, from laws to technology to culture, as well as knowledge of foreign magical cultures, creatures, and spells. There was Muggle Studies, but that was both an elective, and the contents highly depended on the… competency, of the professor at the time (and it wasn’t a secret that there had been rather incompetent ones in the past). In certain other countries, 'magical' and 'mundane' knowledge were much less segregated. He was glad that an actual subject finally arrived here, because even with the increased class time due to his subject taking place in a spell itself, there was far too much content he wanted to teach, but was kept from doing so. (After all, he couldn’t keep students in class seven hours a day, every day – at least not at Hogwarts, anyway.)

Qingying shook Simon’s hand with a smile after stepping away from the shop awning he’d been waiting beneath. Hogsmeade was decorated for Halloween. There were already students running around purchasing pumpkin-shaped treats, and girls wearing cat ears – an accessory that had trickled into Britain from the magical community in Japan.

He raised a hand to decline the butterbeer, but the next moment, Simon felt the bottle warm up in his hands, and Qingying was offering a small glass to him on the palm of his hand, his other hand holding a bottle labelled Peach Juice.

“I’m vegan,” he explained, and – after the bottle opened with a pop – began to tip juice into a second floating glass.

"Oh! I suppose, you know, I've never really considered it..." Simon started laughing and he turned the bottle back to examine it. "I suppose there is butter in this, isn't there. Which, frankly, sounds... awful," he huffed, and twisted open the cap to pour it into one of the glasses, leaving the other for Qin's peach juice. "Simon Veler," he introduced himself with a light bow of his head, since his hands were now occupied. "Pleasure to meet you. Have you been waiting long?"

“Oh, definitely,” said Qingying while nodding at his cup. “I’ve been here an hour.”
It was impossible to tell whether he was joking.

“Sure,” Qingying blinked back at him. He raised a hand – the bottle now floating – to point up at the afternoon sun. “I counted a dinosaur… a crocodile… an elephant… thirty cars, one Imisckus Dragon, three British Shorthair cats, five poodles, one Thestral, one coffee mug, and three teacups – in the clouds’… shapes.”

"Ah, but did you catch the Hungarian Horntail?" Simon pointed up at an obscure swirl that disappeared beyond a tree line in the distance.

"That is a Hungarian Horntail. With the horns to prove it," Simon chuckled, crossing his free hand over his chest as he gazed across the scenery, taking it all in. "They call this place Hogsmeade, is that right? I've never been. What an enchanting place."

“A little paused in history – just the way many enjoy it,” Qingying smiled, and then touched his peach juice glass to Simon’s. “Nice to meet you; call me Qingying.” He laughed lightly, and it was like water trickling in a stream.

"It's certainly different to what I've grown accustomed to," Simon replied thoughtfully. "In New York everything is always on, all the time. Go, go, go, buzz buzz buzz. Something about cars. These people have it right," he pointed to a literal horse-drawn carriage.

“Cars are faster, though.” He was watching the horse’s legs, imagining them charmed to go at quadruple speed, amused.

"That they are. I'm shocked you're aware of them, in all honesty. The disconnect between the wizarding and muggle communities truly boggles the mind. I suppose that's why I'm here," he waved his hand in a vague gesture. "Ah, before I forget! Haixiu also bid me to extend a hello to your friend... Larry? Lenny? Leonard!"

"Really? You're really not going to correct Lenny?" Laurie stepped out from behind the shop, a smirk on his features.

"I'm, ah, Leopold? Logan. Limes." Simon snapped his fingers knowingly.

"That's the one. Limes Keelan, at your service."

"It can't be Leresa," Simon tilted his head.

"Not with that attitude. I'm Laurie," he held out a hand to shake. "So close and yet so far."

"Oh, dear."

"The tales of Limes Keelan will never be forgotten."

"I deeply apologize. Sincerely. Truthfully."

"One day our grandchildren's grandchildren will ask--"

"Who's the limiest of them all?"

"Oh, Qin! Check out that sick snail!"

"That is not a snail."

"Who's the classiest of them all, it's this guy," he jerked two thumbs at his own chest. "Professor, ah, Veler, right? Oh, hey, I've got one of yours. The insane one. Oh my god, this kid. Qin, have you met these kids? This girl legit tried to petrify a house elf. I'm like, just because you can, doesn't mean you should..."

"Ah, yes," Simon winced. "Ziva can be a bit... a lot. So I'm assuming that's how she wound up in detention this week?"

"Yeah, we frown on torturing the help."

“Okay,” Qingying dipped his head, and appeared as if he was going to say something else, but stopped, looking at something over Simon’s shoulder. Then he gestured at his company to wait a moment, and took a few steps forward.

“Sean,” he raised his voice just a little to call without any hint of a warning tone, and a student-sized figure clothed in Hogwarts robes froze with his back to them.

The second year turned around slowly, smiling awkwardly. “Yes, Professor Euphemeria…?”

Qingying took two more steps forwards to be closer to him, and, while smiling, opened one of his hands, palm-upwards, indicating the child should hand something over.

The student’s brows lowered while looking up at him, reluctant. “Pleaaase? I saved up for it.”

Qingying inclined his head patiently. “You know it’s not allowed.”

Sean’s shoulders tensed even more and he seemed to battle with himself internally.

Qingying let out a huff. “Tell you what: You give me this, and I’ll show you something similar that you can have.”

“Really?” Sean immediately perked up.

Qingying nodded, and after another gesture at the two other professors, accompanied the kid into the joke shop opposite.

A few minutes later, they re-emerged, a colourful mixture of ribbons and tiny balls both solid and fluffy whirling in a bright cyclone just above and in front of Sean’s head, a wide smile on his face as he stared up at it.

Qingying showed him the small box he’d confiscated. “I’ll give it back to you when you know how to use it in fourth year.”

“Okay…”

Qingying inclined his head to indicate he should go, and after a quick bob of his head, and a quick, sheepish smile of acknowledgement for Simon and Laurie, Sean scampered off towards the three friends waiting for him down the street.

Qingying looked down at the box briefly and then pocketed it, re-joining Simon and Laurie.

By the time Qin had come back Laurie was gone, leaving Simon by himself. He was chatting with a chirpy bowtruckle and glanced up at their return. "Oh, hello!"

A bowtruckle?

Qingying looked down at it, interested. “Where do you live, little one?” He asked a living branch thing that couldn’t even talk back, but, well.

Simon held out his finger and it jumped on. "Over there," he pointed at the frozen lake in the distance. "She's from there." He was quite assured about that, but Qingying could sense Simon wasn't fully human. Almost, certainly not enough to be anything other than a muddled half-blood, but with the slightest, vaguest hint of something other.
