Owl Wings

Where owls fly in and out of Hogwarts to deliver and send mail. For students who don't have an owl, there are public barn and tawny owls that fly in and out on a regular basis.

Owl Wings

Post by Qingying » Tue Dec 05, 2017 4:29 am

It was a snowy afternoon at Hogwarts. Harry had come just after lunchtime to give a guest lecture to a group of sixth and seventh years. Qingying would have joined the staff there, but he’d had a class to teach.

Perhaps it was due to memories, or a glimpse of an owl carrying a small package flying by a window, but after the lecture ended mid-afternoon, Harry found himself going to the owlery.

It was cleaner than it had been during his school years, and if he’d visited during the seven years after, it looked much like it did then. At that time, of course, most didn’t know it was because Qingying had taken it upon himself to look after it.

There were no droppings or bits of small animal skeletons on the floor or walls, and the currently unoccupied boxes held comfortable bedding. A few owls blinked at Harry while others remained asleep, the room moderately warm. It felt like a place people could stay and write a letter or have a chat - or pamper their owls.

A pile of light grey and white stirred in a corner, two owls tucked next to it. Harry now saw this pile was a person, with long flowing robes and hair. Qingying blinked up at Harry sleepily, and gave a smile.
“Good”- he glanced out of the window to check – “afternoon.”

"Were you sleeping?" Harry asked a bit stupidly, the first thing that came to mind, and for a brief moment he felt like a child again and not like a man about to enter his 40s. He came to an abrupt halt when Qingying moved, looking for all the world like a kid who'd gotten caught with his hand in a cauldron cake bin.

He missed Hedwig.

He'd always avoided the owlery any time he came to Hogwarts. He had never replaced his old familiar; they had a family owl, and the kids were allowed their own, but none of them were Harry's and frankly he didn't want one. He was fine using pay-for owls, or borrowing someone else's. Plenty of people did that and it never set them back.

The man wore black robes with fine silver edging, and a cloak clasped across his shoulders and over his chest for warmth that was similarly black. He'd given up wearing House colors long ago; though some people wore them still well into their adult years, Harry was one of the sorts who found it ridiculous to label yourself forever by how you spent your middle- and high-school years.

“Mhm,” Qingying nodded, leaning his back against the wall as Sergeant the short-eared owl grumbled about being disturbed and flew from the spot beside him back to his usual box. Roseline the barred owl stayed asleep, tucked against his leg. A white orb that Hogwarts students were familiar with as something that usually floated near Professor Euphemeria or Professor Keelan, glowed softly beside him.
“You want to come?” Qingying patted the floor beside him. “It’s very warm.” It really was, as if it had been heated.

"...And sit on the floor?" Harry confirmed with just a hint of incredulity that he liked to think he otherwise concealed very well. There was something generally appealing about Qingying; he had a sort of magnetic pull to him that disarmed most people, not literally, and could get away with making unusual requests while taking barely any social standing hit at all.

A thick, soft purple-blue cushion appeared next to Qingying, and Qingying patted that instead. “Not floor," he offered.

Harry hadn't meant sit on the floor as in the bare floor, but rather had been disbelieving about sitting on the floor at all, but Qingying's quick thinking made him smile and before he knew it, he was joining him as he took a seat on the pillow. "You come up here often?"

“Mhm hm,” Qingying hummed musically, and stroked Roseline with his left hand, who opened one eye to check what had settled beside her, and then closed it, safe. The orb floated over to Harry, as if checking him out.
“It’s nice here, and there’s fresh air…” Said fresh air did come in through the windows, but the room was still warm.

"Can you explain this orb?" Harry asked this politely (he felt) and not with the strain of wariness that it definitely deserved. He was no stranger to seeing bizarre magic, but he liked to know what was going on about him.

"Oh," Qingying smiled, and extended his hand to hover his palm beneath the orb. "This is Shuang. He's a Sheng Xue Hua from the Himalayas - don't worry, he's just checking you out."
Sheng Xue Hua were an extremely rare plant-like (I'm sure the wizarding world has better classifications) species thought by the few who knew of them to be almost extinct.
The orb bobbed a couple of times in front of Harry - a motion that definitely seemed like a response.

Both of his brows lifted in curiousity. "Really? I had thought they were extinct."

Qingying chuckled. “And this one is certainly not helping to propagate his species by refusing to return to an appropriate climate.”

His gaze suddenly lifted just before a scrabbling sound came from the window behind Harry. A ginger bundle practically tumbled over the windowsill, ruffled and holding onto it for dear life. Qingying rose and went over to gently pick up the owl, murmuring, “Ahh… You tried so hard, you brave, silly thing…”

He returned with the owl to sit on the floor. It was very small – only just over six inches – obviously battered by the elements and limp from exhaustion, eyes barely open. It had an unusually bright coloration and was definitely not native. Harry recalled that it was the owl he’d seen flying by the window earlier, now minus package.

Qingying began to tend to it, warming it up and checking and healing any injuries. He held out a small syringe of warm glucose solution to Harry. “Here, you can give her some water – four drops at a time.” The little owl, eyes still closed, opened her mouth cooperatively.
