Withering

Post by Patience Juneau » Mon Dec 11, 2017 3:06 am

A few short days later, Qingying's club was letting out. The child he'd invited prior, Patience Juneau, had shown up and silently listened before producing excellent versions of each spell taught and analyzed. His magic was very delicate and intricate, and entirely nonverbal. When the class let out, though, he stayed behind to watch a young girl approach Qingying. She leaned up on her tip-toes to whisper in his ear, thanks for your support! before flouncing out of the room.

Hm.
He’d still been wearing the ribbon – it was pretty and he figured it was fine to leave it until it dropped off on its own… and if it didn’t then uh, he’d ask the kid whether it was okay to remove it?
Was it because of that? Did this ribbon symbolise the support of something like pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness, or support for a person?
Qingying tilted his head at Patience.

He was holding a moving newspaper, The Daily Prophet in his hands.

Well here we go. Qingying went over to him. “Can I read that?” He asked with a smile.

He held it up to Qingying. The front page showed a portrait of a man wearing a black top hat and who had a beard, silently gazing at the camera for what appeared to be a mugshot. He was destined to be executed by a team of aurors at the wizard prison Azkaban tomorrow at 5:00 PM sharp. His name was Belfry Carrower and supposedly he was responsible for cursing several muggles in broad daylight on the streets of London. Qingying recognized the name; the student who'd accosted him only moments before was Alisa Carrower.

He carried on reading to find exactly what this guy did and why people thought he deserved execution.

There wasn't a whole lot of information in the article. The situation wasn't elaborated upon, and Belfry didn't seem all that repentant or remorseful for his crime. Nevertheless, a large gathering of supporters had grown around him, each donning the same platinum-inscribed burgundy ribbon as was tied around Qingying's wrist. It didn't seem to be the following of a fanatic or a murderer, but rather a protest of the appalling nature of state-sanctioned execution, and a cry for mercy on Belfry's behalf due to mysterious extenuating circumstances.

Qingying tilted his head. He didn’t usually demonstrate support for anything without finding out about it first.
“Do you have one too?” Qingying lifted his long sleeves to show Patience the ribbon.

Patience didn't! If Qingying glanced down at his wrists (the robe sleeves had fallen slightly as he'd upheld the newspaper), he would easily see this. Perhaps it was a bit presumptuous, but Qingying knew the child and was aware that he didn't do anything without a genuine reason, even if this reason wasn't immediately apparent. He also didn't seem to be the type to take up social justice causes, which left only one question: why was he directing Qingying toward this man?

Qingying believed there was always a reason people did something, and even if someone didn’t or couldn’t tell him, he’d find out.

He straightened and looked out at the classroom, reaching out mentally, and a few seconds later numerous issues of past newspapers flew into the room, and, after a few minutes, a handful of school owls bearing today’s newspapers other than The Daily Prophet. All the newspapers lined up in a circle around Qingying as he read and gathered information about the man and his case while his right hand fed the owls treats for being so quick.

A name kept appearing, that of Belfry's daughter, Alise. Alise was a bit famous around the school on account of the execution, and because she was vocally and openly supportive of Belfry and insistent that the wizarding world modernize itself further by straying away from the death penalty. Qingying caught onto another name as well, one muggleborn Ravenclaw named Lane Foster from Cork who'd been arrested for the same crime, and then released back to the school when Belfry confessed. He was about sixteen and in Patience's year, due to a failing of the system to integrate him into the magical community upon turning eleven.

Sergeant had been sent to find Alise but Qingying had held off making contact with her before finishing the articles, and now the girl was back, looking puzzled as she walked behind the owl.

“Hey,” Qingying greeted with a smile, the newspapers having all zipped under a desk out of sight. “I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about this” – he indicated his ribbon – “as it’s always worth hearing from someone who knows, right?” He said it with a tone that made it sound as if she knew the most about what was going on, and he was willing to listen.

Lane may be who Patience was directing him to, but he was going to clarify this first.

Alise blinked dark blue eyes up at him. "Yeah! I mean, I thought you knew, because of..." she touched her wrist, where a matching ribbon lay neatly tied across it. "It's for my dad."

"I'm not sure," she looked a little guilty even as she said it. "He's not a bad person. He was just doing what he had to. I appreciate your support, Professor Euphemeria."

Qingying dipped his head as acknowledgement.
“What did he do? Articles are not very clear about that.”

"He tried to protect someone from bad people," Alise answered.

Patience stood in front of them, watching them both.

Hmm.
Qingying glanced at Patience curiously.
“Was what he did so serious that they... warrant this?" He tilted his head at Alise.
"Did the spells damage the muggles beyond return...?"

There was very little information to go on. Qingying decided to go find Lane and, if need be, contact some Auror friends (like Lee!).
He nodded.
Stephanie, Alise’s friend, had also been guided to the door of the classroom (by Shuang) at the right time, and Qingying smiled at them.
“Don’t miss dinner,” he said gently.

He would have invited him along anyway, so this was fine!
Qingying couldn’t really personally do anything even if the man hadn’t cursed people. In that case, maybe connections would be useful for prompting further investigation???
He asked around and hoped he’d find Lane while he was alone.

Qingying found him, sitting in the library by himself after dinner had let out. Patience immediately went up to him and stood beside his chair. Lane glanced up. "Uh, hello?"

“Hey,” Qingying greeted with a smile. “I heard you returned to the school recently. We haven’t met; I’m Professor Euphemeria, the Charms teacher who started here in November.” The hand he offered was low enough for the other to decline.

"Uh, OK," Lane's eyes narrowed. He gave a little two-fingered salute in place of a handshake. "How can I be of service," he grinned.
