Dreams Before the Night

Post by Harry Potter (Circle) » Sun Dec 03, 2017 7:43 pm

It was a dreary December weekend at Hogwarts castle. A thick blanket of snow coated the grounds, fresh fall from the night before covering over increasingly heavy and icy layers that had fallen, partially melted, frozen, and fallen again, so that by now it was nearly five feet deep in places and utterly miserable to walk through.

The Great Hall was lit for the evening by candles floating overhead. Some students were out at tables studying, but most had already retreated for the day to their common rooms as the sky mimicked in the ceiling above dimmed purple.

Several students and staff members so far had reported a corrupt unicorn, or a beast that looked like a corrupt unicorn, sighted in the Forbidden Forest. Nothing like the creature had been sighted or heard of before, so they'd reported the occurrence to the Ministry on the off-chance that they wanted to send someone out to investigate, and none other than Harry Potter himself had taken an interest in the report.

To tell the truth, the man really was looking for any sort of excuse to visit his old school. Perhaps he'd run into his children, two of whom were already in attendance. He was to meet with Professor Grayson, who'd volunteered to escort him on the possible goose-chase. The animal had only been reported from the Astronomy Tower toward the evenings and at night, so that was when they would be going out.

He'd Flooed in and was now in the Great Hall waiting, getting occasional looks and murmurs from students. He wore black robes, and a heavy black cloak with a silver clasp and red and gold trim at the bottom. The man was polishing his glasses on his sleeve when Brandt came up.

Brandt was rather oddly dressed for a wizard. Sure he was wearing a robe with golden accents that was unbound and hanging open slightly. It was the western Stetson he wore on his head, the dark jeans, and flannel button up he wore under his robe and the stingray boots on his feet that set him apart as unusual. He looked more like a little trying to look like a wizard than the other way around.

He smiled when he saw Harry, but unlike his die hard fans and worshippers, Brandt's expression didn't care that same level if awe and disbelief. He'd only heard about the war and Harry's role in it through books. He'd not been raised on the legend like so many others. To him, Harry was just another Auror. He'd met quite a few.

He held out his hand to shake. "Mr. Potter, I presume." He also wasn't searching for the scar.

Brandt's dress was particularly odd for a Hogwarts staff member, who wore uniforms like their students, but Harry assumed it was simply because he was off-hours and wanted to rub the fact that he was Muggle-born in everyone's noses. It wasn't an attitude Harry found, after years in the society, he cared for; he was the sort of person who recommended rather strongly that you try to fit in if you could do it.

Wonder why!

Brandt of course had started school his first year of Harry's last, and would have lived through the aftermath of the war, the Ministry's restructuring, the re-opening and the re-building of Hogwarts all while he was at the school itself. Not reacting to Harry Potter was a bit like not bothering to acknowledge that a Muggle President had walked into the room: it was odd, and spoke of purposeful denial than anything else. Harry was used to that as well though. His hangers on came in two types, and he'd found he cared for neither.

"Mr. Grayson," he agreed, shaking his hand with a firm grip and a friendly smile. "I hope I'm not taking up too much of your time with this." Harry hoped that Brandt had volunteered and not been volun-told to do it by the Headmistress; that would be horribly awkward for all of them. "Hopefully it's just a weird deer or something. That'd be a nice change for the forest, eh?"

His particular manner of dress was indeed because he was off hours and if they were going to be traipsing through the woods he preferred to be dressed accordingly for it. He might be a wizard in the UK, but he was still a 'good ol' boy' at heart. Blame it all on his roots, as the song goes.

He didn't bother correcting Harry on the Mr. instead of Dr. part. "Please, call me Brandt," his smile was warm and friendly just like his handshake. "And if I had something more pressing I wouldn't have volunteered."

Harry's remark about the 'beast' hopefully being a deer made him smirk. "Knock on wood, I hope you're right." He extended his arm towards the exit. "Shall we then?"

"Harry then," he laughed and relaxed some, a bit easier now that they were apparently passed the formalities. You could take the student out of Hogwarts, but not the Hogwarts out of the student. He stuffed his hands into his pockets, tilting his head to the door but not moving, as if silently asking if they should get going now or if they were waiting for anything. "Have you ever personally seen it?"

Brandt shook his head. "Not personally no but I was out riding my horse one day, weren't even near the forest and something spooked him bad. Didn't catch a glimpse of anything before we headed back."

It could have been any number of things in the forest that had done that, but Harry was hoping it was the thing they were after. If it existed.

They opened the doors and stepped outside.
