Qin's multiface alerted him to an incoming magical communique by glowing in his pocket as he rummaged about the quarters he shared with Laurie in preparation for his teaching day. Greg's familiar features graced the smooth stone, showing an office in the background. "Good morning," the lawyer offered him a small smile.

Qingying had been pulling out a book from the space between a desk and the wall – likely knocked down there by a mischievous Shuang. Qingying missed Ozzy; back when he was around, items would often shift from their rightful places as the niffler searched around for shiny things.
He removed the magical communication device from his robe and smiled back. “Good morning, Greg.”

"I thought you'd might like an update on Mr. Foster." Greg was never known for beating around the bush.

He nodded, soft smile on his face.

"Most pertinently, he's being released," Greg started. "There's still a great deal of confusion over what occurred, but we sent a team of Obliviators to interview the victims and corroborate both Carrower and Foster's testimony. The court has deigned to treat this case as a matter of aggravated self-defense, which means neither of them will do jail time."

“What of the victims?”

"They've been obliviated and treated to the best of our ability, but three do possess curiously permanent ailments."

He tilted his head, but then vigorously shook it; this wasn’t something he should ask about. It wasn’t vital, either.
“How is Mr. Carrower?”

"He's been released on his own recognizance, but the judge is recommending he be compelled to testify under veritaserum."

“What do they think possibly happened?” He knew Greg would decide what he could and couldn’t tell him.

"That's the issue, they're not really certain. There seems to be this issue of the Unbreakable Vow, which doesn't make any sense when compared to the rest of the situation. Everyone involved gets the impression that there's more to this."

He tilted his head. “What was Lane’s involvement?”

"According to his testimony, he cast the spells which caused the damage," Greg said, his words careful as always.

“Why did they need to ‘defend’?”

"Allegedly, these individuals were causing harm in the vicinity."

“To them – or other muggles?”

"Other muggles, I presume. Regrettably, that's not our jurisdiction." Greg offered him a rueful smile, something that acknowledged both sides of wrongdoing, but condemned neither. He always had a way of forgiveness about him, even as a child, reluctant to damn someone regardless of their history.

He dipped his head as acknowledgement. “Why was Belfry… sentenced to execution?”

"That is a curious situation," Greg admitted. "I'm not Belfry's legal representative, so I don't know the full story, but there is definitely something going on around here. I drew attention to this case. Once I did, they were forced to react appropriately and issue a stay, which means I've got a target on my back. That's another reason I'm contacting you. Both you and Lane need to be careful. Not everything is as it seems."

"It's hard to say." Greg gave him a sympathetic smile.

“Mhm…” Qingying dipped his head. “Might Lane be asked to go back?”

"It's possible. These things can drag out for a while, but he'll be permitted to return to school in the interim."

He nodded. “When is he coming back?”

"Shouldn't be long, now. A day or so."
