Laurie winced. "It's, uh, you were just, uh, trying to be nice," he figured with a laugh. "I'm sorry."

His eyes narrowed, his gaze falling to the ground.

"No," he said slowly with a shake of his head. "I don't really think I was trying to be nice.
I suppose... if I was being nice... I would have... considered that it would be odd for someone you just met to give you something, and that it's natural for someone to feel wary about it."
He lifted his gaze and smiled softly.
"You're not at fault at all. I just... did whatever I wanted to - again." He gave a little grimace.

He watched him for a couple of moments, and then dipped his head, turning away and saying 'you're welcome' when he realised the kid had said it a few times this evening and he hadn't answered with the usual reply.

Qingying carried Roseline back to her box, giving Sergeant a look as Shuang settled back on Laurie's shoulder.

"The manual page there says to 'hold the Bifacetransferer" - wizards always gave weird names - "with both thumbs pressed on the screen for fives seconds' so Mahra should be able to use it fine. It doesn't need a wizard either, and if the spell wears off, it can be updated on this side."

"OK, but can we just talk about bifacetransferer," Laurie snorted.

Right? Manduke didn’t quite grasp the concept of the internet. What’s he going to do, when he makes more connections? Trifacetransferer? Multifacetransferer? Manylotsoffacetransferer?” Qingying was honestly thinking about it, looking somewhat perplexed.

Laurie selected a decently sized envelope and dropped the stone inside, taking the time to pen a simple note in scratchy scrawl. "You sure Mahra doesn't have to do anything on his end?" Laurie looked a little skeptical at that. It wasn't that Mahra wasn't smart, but he definitely, well, lacked focus. He was just as likely to spend a half hour staring at the shiny smooth rock as he was to use it.

Qingying hummed and returned, pressing two fingers instead of two thumbs onto his screen, and finding that it worked, so he had the ink on the manual peel off and rearrange to say ‘fingers’ instead of ‘thumbs’.

“It should be okay… It’ll light up if you’re touching it and ‘requesting his presence’, so he should notice that.”

"You know about the internet?" Laurie tilted his head up at Qingying. Most wizards didn't know anything about muggle technology.

"I can't get online here," Laurie lamented. He'd brought a beaten-up iPod Touch in his personal belongings but hadn't used it since King's Cross.

“Mhm,” he nodded. “Electronics don’t work well here – traditional mechanical things would, though.”
He went over to Sergeant, got him to reluctantly step onto his arm, and carried the owl over to Laurie.

Qingying smiled softly.
“Animals – and plants – are… easier. And you spend a lot of time here.”
He lowered himself to show Sergeant the envelope and the owl glared back at him with a narrow-eyed, inaudible expression of what do you want.

Qingying smiled down at Sergeant, who accepted the touch.
“Believe it or not, as grumpy as he is, he is quite the excellent deliverer, aren’t you? Now, this package is quite important – very important – Sergeant, so if you don’t manage to deliver it, make sure you come back and tell us, okay?”
Sergeant looked at him with an unimpressed expression that said he already knew this, and then turned his head away proudly and stuck out his leg.

Laurie concealed a smile as he tied the newest parcel to Sergeant's leg. He pocketed the other half of the, uh, bifacetransferer somewhat protectively.

Sergeant lifted his leg a bit, as if testing the weight, and then immediately took off out of the window with the bouyant flight of short-eared owls.
Qingying turned to watch him go.

Laurie stuck his head out of the window to do the same, getting snow all over his frizzy curls. He shook his head and smiled to himself as the owl screeched in the distance, eager for flight.

Snow in mid-October would perhaps be considered unusual by some, but nothing was that unusual at Hogwarts, and Qingying enjoyed it, pulling the flakes in through the window and having them stream over him with crisp air that whooshed through his robes and hair.

Then, he opened his eyes and, with a grin and more gently, sent the dancing flakes towards Laurie.

Icing-topped Laurie.

“You mentioned homework, I think,” Qingying chuckled.

"Yeah," Laurie tapped the black tote over his shoulder. "Two pages on amortentia." He grimaced unconsciously.

Qingying laughed and recited the introductory line to his own Amormentia essay from long ago.
“Time to go back and do it then, I suppose,” he smiled and turned towards the door to invite Laurie out, Shuang sitting on Laurie's shoulder quite happily with snow still resting on his glowing form.
