Lumos Maxima

Post by Young Lawrence Keelan » Mon Nov 20, 2017 2:41 pm

1998, Hogwarts.

Qingying's new owner was, well, hmmm.

Over the next month or so, he observed nearly every aspect of the kid's life, and you could learn a lot by just watching.

Laurie was quiet in social situations, unless asked a direct question or engaged on a subject he knew lots about, and then he spoke with firm confidence. He was easily startled and quite frequently and intensely distressed, but challenged situations in small ways, slowly testing the limits of his new home, and wasn't afraid to stand up to his more mean spirited peers.

He spent time with Einda, Brandt and Marlee in-between lessons or periods of quiet study, providing a sensible balance between rational, verbose and emotional. He manipulated circumstances subtly to make his friends feel good, but shied away from the attention that other people focused upon him. When asked personal questions, he usually evaded or outright lied.

Most of his free time was spent studying, and this evening, after he finished a session he made his way up to the Slytherin Common Room to curl up by the fireplace and stretch his fingers out over the warming sparks, watching water slosh over the large window with a faintly pleased expression.

During this time, Kardat Blacksworth, a new teacher, had also built a reputation. Unlike many thought when they first saw him, he wasn’t harsh or especially curt. He was direct, but fair, expected respect, and disciplined for poor behaviour. When stopped while walking in the corridors, students were surprised to find he was willing to answer class-related questions rather than be dismissive. He also appeared to treat all students the same. Partly due to his appearance and unique eyes, a number of girls chatted about him, and he gained some fans.

The common room was temporarily empty. As Laurie looked into the fire, something at his peripheral vision caught his attention. Upon looking towards it, he saw a floating, glowing white orb. Its light looked fluffy and soft, and it bobbed slightly in the air.

It dodged and sailed away towards the door, rather playfully, and then hovered, as if waiting.

Laurie got up, eyes locked on it, and made his way over to the door.

It lead him out of the Slytherin Dungeons and onwards until they reached a slightly dark, scarcely used corridor.

The orb waited by a wall until he was in front of it, and then touched itself to the wall, moving across right, down, across right, down, across leeft, up, across right, up, across left, up, across right, ending back where it started. Then it stayed still.

Slowly, Laurie raised his wand and tapped at the spots the orb had indicated.

Light grey outlines depicting animals appeared on the wall, fitting together perfectly so that the line of one animal's back was also another one's tail. The lines did not glow, but were vivid, and the wall pulled apart from them so that it became numerous animal-shaped pieces existing independently of each other. A couple moments later, the pieces of wall faded away, with some light edges turning into small, faint sparkles that drifted downwards towards the ground, disappearing before landing.

Directly before him, a step inside the original wall, was another, but to the left was a gently sloping passage that lead downwards. Its entire length was lit by similar glowing orbs of smaller but varying sizes and multiple colours, all hovering and bobbing or floating around lazily. The walls were once again filled with outlines of animals, but this time they did not slot together, and glowed almost white, the lines undulating slowly so that while never straying too far, the images of animals moved.

Always a curious sort, Laurie tightened his fingers around his wand and the tip glowed, illuminating the area before him as he made his way through the passage leading down. His eyes studied the movement of figures on the walls, absorbed and fascinated.

The orbs emanated a soft warmth, giving the passage a comfortable temperature in a mid-october that was getting chillier. Orbs that floated in his path simply bounced softly off of him when he brushed them, and ones near his face just went through him. A few even darted away, as if they knew to dodge. Some settled on the walls, perched like curious kittens.

The larger white orb followed him, floating behind his right shoulder. It was also slightly warm, but not as much as the others, as if it wasn't made for that.

He walked for about half of a minute and then came upon the door - which looked more like a curtain that was patterned like a large, forest-green leaf. It automatically pulled aside with the sound of heavy fabric as he neared it.

Before him was a small, round room. The walls were wooden, and the ceiling tapered upwards. On the wall in front of him were two horizontal rectangles that acted as windows despite not possessing glass or panes - and he felt no wind coming from them. Between them was a wooden door with a similar texture as the walls, but it had a darker border, some sort of clothing or robes hung off of a hook, and a handle. Through the windows, he could see the lake and the darkening sky of evening.

A medium-sized, neatly made wooden bed was to his right, the head of the bed against the wall (well, not quite, as the wall was rounded), the foot of it towards the center of the room. Beyond it was a wooden bookshelf filled with books with various languages on their spines, with some tomes appearing to be quite aged. Right next to this, on the left of it, was the right-side window.

The left side of the room was a counter with drawers and cupboards, a sink, pots and pans hung on the wall just above, and a couple of shelves of spices and seasonings. There was a (the third) window here as well, just to the left. To the right, beside the window left of the door, were more occupied, yup, shelves.

A low, square wooden table sat in the centre of the room, on top of a rug. The entire room was carpeted and the general colour theme was beige and browns and earthy. Besides the obvious main door, there was another one to his left.

Laurie spent a while in the main room, picking over various things and searching through shelves and cupboards. It felt secret, somehow, and he glanced up at the orb floating over his shoulder. As always when he was by himself, he was as much at ease as he ever seemed, and he smiled a little. "I wonder who lives here," he said out loud, making sure to put everything back in its proper place before reaching out to the handle of the left-side door.

It opened!

It was a bathroom. With bathroom things. Very neat and well kept. It was small, but there was a deep bath. There were no bottles of lotion and oils and such things Laurie had seen some people liked to use.

The bathroom was brighter than the main room (because who liked to not be able to see their face when they needed to use the mirror?), lit by white orbs that sat on the waterproof walls. Unlike many lights in the muggle world, these ones never pierced the eyes when one looked into them.

The lighting for the main room was a warmer colour, providing a rather cosy feeling.

Laurie grimaced at himself in the mirror. Sleepless nights tended to take their toll on a person, and his hair was wild and crazy, making him look like a mad scientist. "You've got to do something with this whole thing," he circled his face with his index finger, snorting to himself.

It did a couple loop-the-loops!

Except it was a round orb without distinctive upper or lower portions so it just looked like it drew two circles.

It flew in a straight line towards the door between two windows, and floated there.

The door opened and he was upon grass, directly in front of the Great Lake. The tips of the Hogwarts castle was visible towards his left, but this area was effectively hidden from the view of those inside. He had somehow ended up here, despite only walking for about thirty seconds in the passage.

The door behind him closed soundlessly, and he could now see he'd come out of a tree - one that had a much smaller diameter on the outside compared to the space inside of it, and the door fit perfectly, as if it was a part of the tree (and perhaps it was?), disguised for those who didn't know.

Grass extended to either side, upon which were trees towards the left that obscured his view of the lower floors of the castle, and more to the right and behind the tree-room.

The grassy area he stood on was clear and open, the ground rather flat. The water was calm, lapping quietly. Peeking from behind the trees was the glow of windows of the Hogwarts Great Hall, where dinner was being served.

Qingying had been with Laurie for one month and a half, and during the past two weeks, had given the child glimpses of his manifested form so that their physical meeting would feel less unfamiliar. As Laurie walked to class, Qingying’s figure was briefly present, mixed in amongst the people much further down the corridor, but so briefly it didn’t really give the child a chance to register and question it. As Laurie headed towards the junction of four corridors, Qingying crossed from the left to the right. He increased the frequency and clarity of these glimpses slightly as the two weeks went on, but was never present for long enough, or was near enough, for Laurie to fix his attention on him.

The orb floated towards Laurie’s right shoulder, and then away, rising up a bit before hovering in place. Beside it, a cluster of smaller glowing, sparkling white orbs appeared, came apart, formed into white flower petals, and began to fall. They turned into soft, fluffy feathers by the time they touched the grass, and then dissolved into a trail of bright glitter that danced onto the water of the lake. From within the pieces of light parting and falling light, emerged a figure.

Their hair was white and long, extending almost to their ankles, and their clothes – hanfu – which Laurie may have thought looked rather like robes – consisted of a long-sleeved, light grey outer layer, open at the front, and an inner white layer – also long, with one side overlapping the other on the chest – tied with a white cloth belt. There was a marking composed of not-quite circles and curved lines on their forehead. Their left eye was gold and pupil-ness, and their right eye was a rich azure.

The figure was slender, and the lines of their features gave little confirmation to assumptions of their sex. Their eyes settled on Laurie with a small, soft smile, white eyelashes lowering as they narrowed their eyes. They turned and dipped their head a little so that they gazed at him slightly sideways, and the curvature of their lips increased - perhaps curious, perhaps playful.

“Good evening.” Their voice was soft, tone inviting, but gave little clue as to whether they were male or female. Perhaps it was the slight differences in carriage due to weight placement, or maybe the obvious lack of breasts, but many, after a pause, would lean their guesses towards male. A breeze swirled by and rippled the flowing material of their clothing as the glowing white orb settled quietly on their right shoulder.
