He inhaled and then let out the breath, looking thoughtfully out at the beds before him. He didn't speak for a few moments.

“Stay here. Don’t run away. You are safe.”

"I have something here for you, Mr. Keelan," Yarah, the social worker who'd been assigned his case, popped her head in the door, interrupting them with a crinkle-eyed smile. Kardat recognized her from the few pediatric cases he'd consulted on and worked over the years, a dark black bob framing refined features and light brown eyes.

"I think you'll want to see this." It was in a manila folder with the St. Mungo's logo on it and she walked over to lay it on the table beside him. "I've highlighted the pertinent information, since it can be a little dense even for non-medical folk." With that, she turned and exited, high heels clicking on the floor.

Laurie blinked and picked it up, shuffling to the side so Kardat couldn't see inside and holding it on his knee, flipping through the pages. His eyes scanned the writing and hooked onto something, every muscle in his face rapidly falling when he finally saw what Yarah wanted him to see. "This can't be right."

He rapidly turned pages over, index finger tracing words. "This is insane. Zero--" he stuttered. "Zero copies per--this isn't possible." Laurie looked up at Kardat, and then he threw the file aside and got up, running into the room's private bathroom to slam the door.

He didn’t bother picking up the file as there was no one else here who could pick it up and look at it. He just sat there.

Kardat couldn't hear anything from inside.

Laurie was sitting on the edge of the shower, staring at his hands, and then he got up and looked in the mirror, tugging his lower eyelids down slightly. "This is crazy," he said to his reflection. "Get it together, man. Get it together." He turned on the tap and splashed some water on his face.

After a few moments he emerged, having put on the pair of clothes Yarah had folded on top of the counter for him. A pair of gray slacks and a matching soft sweatshirt with the hospital logo emblazoned on it, still warm from the laundry. He lifted it and inhaled deeply, brushing his hands over his arms.

Walking back over, he grabbed the file, and hid it inside the bureau before sitting back down, straightening as though nothing had happened.

Kardat knew what it meant, but one, Laurie was pretending nothing had happened, and two, it really wasn’t a big deal in their world and the kid might as well get used to it.
So he continued to sit there, looking out the window.

“I found I was rather good at removing curses, making and taking apart spells, so I spent more time doing that. Then the-” Now was not a good time to start a whole conversation about the second wizarding war, so he skipped it. “Then, after Britain had some turbulent times – don’t worry, it’s fine now – a position became available at Hogwarts.”

Laurie balanced his elbows on his knees, not saying anything more, eyes lifting to Mahra.

He gave him silence for a while. “Do you want attempts to find the location of the person taken by the Veela to be made? Would knowing where he is, or being certain he won’t return, give you closure or make you feel safer?”

He stood up to leave, glancing over at the sleeping Mahra before bringing his gaze to Laurie.

Laurie leaned over to take Mahra's hand, watching the hourglass vials above his head trickle colored sand down slowly. He supposed it was this hospital's version of a vital statistics monitor. "I will," he murmured. "Tell that other professor thanks, too."
