“He shouldn’t have to,” Qingying said, still smiling softly. “And when something occurs that he cannot help, he blames himself.”

Mahra shook his head. He touched Qingying's forehead again with two fingers, not to take but instead to give, concepts that were too big for him to explain with words. Sometimes, it's easier to take the blame than to admit you couldn't control it in the first place.

He accepted, but then he shook his head.
“I mean… he shouldn’t be in a place where he has to take them – carry them – and blame himself.” His gaze dropped briefly, and then lifted again. “That is not something for a child to do.”

Lots of things shouldn't happen, but that doesn't change reality. A low note of melancholy accompanied these concepts, not for himself, but for his brother. Reality isn't always kind. The cure for pain is love.

“I will give him that. We will give him that.” He reached up to stroke Mahra’s hair. “Both of you.”

"I know," Mahra smiled at him gently. Laurie had a chip on his shoulder the size of Everest, but Mahra was confident it wouldn't always be that way. All of the pain that belonged to Mahra, Laurie had taken instead. And it would have hurt him more to do otherwise, so Mahra accepted it without guilt. Recovery and healing, they're inevitable. Sometimes people die before they do, but if they live long enough, it's inevitable.

His eyes narrowed with a slightly sad smile.
“Sometimes they don’t. And what about those who pass without healing? It’s not always inevitable.” Though it was a nice way to think. Waiting and waiting wasn’t the way.

Mahra smiled again. "If they live," he repeated softly. With love.

He shut his eyes momentarily and dropped his gaze. “Sometimes love… isn’t what they need. Sometimes the love they receive isn’t what they need. Sometimes they need something different. If they never… receive the love that they needed – the right kind – then, is it still inevitable?” He looked back up with a small smile. And yes it was a bit strange to be asking a child this, but Qingying had gotten to know Mahra a bit, and he was never the type of person who let age get in the way.

And Mahra had the benefit of so many minds, so many lives, that he himself wasn't constrained by age, either. "No," he said quietly. But Mahra had seen inside Qingying. That was what Laurie needed.

He was hurting and Mahra could feel it – for Laurie, for them. He looked down. “I hope so.”

He laid his hand on Qingying's cheek, sympathetic. "I know."

He didn’t want to receive comfort from a child – to make them have to give it, so he smiled softly. “I do not know, but I hope. Like I always do.” He bent his arms to cuddle Mahra again. “And I will protect you both – there is reality, and the past cannot be changed, but we have some control over the present; some. The future is made by both past and present. I… probably can’t promise you two will never hurt again” – because promises could be broken by things out of people’s control – “but no one deserves to be hurt” – or punished, in the way that had made Laurie say those words – “so, I will try,” he leaned back a little to look at Mahra again, “and prepare you two so that you’re less likely to be hurt, while not always feeling like something might, residing in tension, or guarded against the world constantly.”

Mahra smiled. Hurt was inevitable, too, but Mahra wasn't afraid of it, and he wasn't guarded against it. "We have you, now. And you have us."

Mahra knew that. Laurie… might take a little bit of time.
He smiled softly at him.

A thought pinged against Qingying's mind like a soft chime. A reminder in Laurie's gruff tones. Qingying was family.

He’d noticed it when Laurie said it, but… He didn’t dare to place too much emphasis on it.
“Yes.”
There was still doubt, but not strongly.

Laurie didn't use words like that lightly. Mahra showed him. Before, it was just the two of them. Now, three. "See?" Hope.

He smiled softly – still sadly, but he was not sorrowful. “Yes,” he lifted his chin slightly and reached up to pet Mahra’s hair again. “Family.”

Mahra burrowed into him and returned his hug, acceptance and love surrounding him easily. Mahra was much freer and more generous with his emotions than Laurie, giving away affection and warmth with ease.

Even if Laurie didn’t give or return affection, Qingying wouldn’t blame him. Even when Laurie was angry and pushed people away, curling up in a ball, Qingying still cared about him - would care about him.
And there was Mahra, too – who he had heard (very limited) mentions of, who he’d sent things to, and who he’d finally met.
“Pleased to meet you, Mahra,” Qingying said while stroking his hair. “I’ll come back to visit.”

"Please," was all Mahra said in response, grinning up at him. He touched Qingying's cheek again and parted from him, spying Laurie in the distance with his friend in tow. He leaned forward to whisper, "Thank you," in Qin's ear before they separated.

“Thank you,” he responded automatically, smiled, and, while backing away, said, “I’ll be here,” and then faded from view.

After Laurie and Brandt had visited Mahra and Saejil, Brandt and Saejil hit it off extremely well and Laurie ducked out to the waiting area to grab something from a vending machine. Well, vending machine-ish. He tapped his hand on the pad and deposited a sickle, grabbing a chocolate frog, cornish pasty and a bottle of pumpkin fizz. He plonked himself onto an empty couch and twisted open the top of his fizz, leaning his elbows on his knees.

Qingying got some peach juice and sat down beside him, not seeming to want to say anything; simply accompanying.
