He was breathing in and out deeply, a hand on his chest, an odd expression on his face like a grimacing smile. "Hey," he huffed softly, picking up his chocolate frog card. "Oh, look, I got Grindelwald. Bit dark, these cards, eh?" Laurie had retained most of his generic-American accent, but sometimes the local cadence seeped through a bit, especially since he was still a kid developing within the neurological language window.

“Your head?” Qingying gestured at his own.

“I’m fine,” he smiled, but he kept looking at him.

Laurie glanced back at him, eyebrows arching slightly as though he could tell something was on Qingying's mind.

He gestured at Laurie’s chest, where his hand had rested.

"Oh," he blinked and settled his hands on his knees. "Breathing exercises, right?" he smiled. Qingying had taught him 4/4 techniques to slow down the heart rate.

Laurie sat back and raised his hand, pausing the chocolate frog mid-jump and returning it to his palm. He held it out to Qingying in an offering.

He looked down at the frog thoughtfully. “You know, with snacks that look like animals… I always wonder, ‘where should I start’? The head seems so barbaric, but from other parts seem more painful… Then, in the end, I probably start from the head."
His gaze moved to Laurie. "Are you feeling alright?"

"Yeah," he said after a moment. "It's been awhile since I've seen him. It's good," he murmured sincerely.

He took the frog and halved it cleanly (preventing himself from grimacing), and passed half to Laurie.
“You’re brothers, after all,” he smiled. Then, after a pause, he gazed ahead of him. “I wondered, a few times, long ago, what it would be like to have a sibling, but then I thought it was a good thing I didn’t, because my household was probably not that suitable for a child to grow up. So,” he gave a small smile, “it was good I was by myself.”

"What was your household like?" Laurie wondered.

“My father was rarely around – I’m not sure I remember him. Mother acted as the ‘head’ of the household, and father, in my memory, was a shadow – a sparse impression. I don’t think I knew my mother, either – we rarely spoke, and we didn’t eat together. I stayed in my room or was in lessons, most of the time.
Good results were important – doing well, improving, not making mistakes. Mother was harsh and everyone listened. I told myself ‘I liked learning’, because, I suppose, if I didn’t, I would have found it difficult. I danced, and played instruments, and didn’t particularly like them, but I never hated them – I never allowed myself to hate them. I liked them, later, though, and studied under other teachers when I was older, and when I travelled.”

"That's awful," Laurie murmured. He nudged Qin with his shoulder. "I'm glad you're out of there. Did you and your mom ever speak when you were an adult?"

He shook his head. “No. I became…” – he showed his palms – “this, when I was twenty-four. She likely passed away.”

Laurie squeezed his hand, not offering any platitudes but also not shying away from attempting to reach him. "Me and Mahra, our, uh," he stuttered there, intending to say household but then amending, "living situation was pretty fucked up. Having each other is how we both stayed alive and sane."

He smiled softly.
“Perhaps for me, but… if it was unnecessary for them to be there… then, it was a good thing, I think. Not being present is better than being present, even if I was there, too.”

"Survival is the most basic human instinct," Laurie murmured. "As much as I wished Mahra wasn't there, you know. To wish he'd never been born? I think that would say, that he's not valuable because his experiences were, weren't good. He's more than that. And, and I needed him. Need him."
