"I don't think I can have this conversation right now," he huffed a laugh, laying his palm over his chest as though struggling to breathe properly. "I just, I just wanted to say I'm sorry, and, you were right."

He gazed at the ground while walking, quiet for a couple of moments.
“I don’t… need to be right. And I don’t want to hurt you, and… there seem to be conversations you don’t really want to have, no matter when it is…”

"It's just personal, for me. It's not, it's not academic, it's not, it's not a thought experiment. It's about my life and it sucks to think about."

He shook his head. “I don’t think of you as… Or this subject as academic or a thought experiment…” Of course it was personal.
“I think… it’s important to have limits, because they can direct our actions.”

"I know," he nodded. "But it's dishonest for me to think like that."

"Because my limits aren't firm. They change depending on the situation. I've had to do a lot of shit over the years to make sure Mahra was safe, OK?" He could feel himself growing agitated again and took a calming, stabilizing breath. "I don't like thinking about it."

He raised a pacifying hand.
“If you know your limits change depending on situation… I hardly think that’s dishonest. Dishonesty is lying to yourself, but if you know your limits change, and that is what they are, I don’t think it’s dishonest.”

"It's dishonest to say that I believe there are absolute things a person can and can't do. You can do anything as long as it's better than the alternative."

"Yeah," he agreed. "I mean, I don't believe in senselessness. I wouldn't do something, like, without a purpose." He shrugged.

He thought about that, and then he looked over at him. “Your emotions… may cloud your judgement, though?”

He was quiet for a few moments, considering.
"I think... part of the reason why it's important to have limits is to help prevent emotion from leading to misjudgement - because there's a structure that helps act as a guide.
Of course" - he huffed a laugh - "sometimes when one is emotional, one fails to see those guides."
Laurie got the feeling that partly because Qingying acknowledged this, he was very firm with himself about seeing them.

Since he’d already brought the subject away from Laurie, he didn’t mind the question.
“My what?”

"Your guides."

Look, never let it be said that Laurie didn't pounce on any opportunity to change the subject.

He complied. c:

“I value life, too, so I will also try to conserve it – but I will do so while hurting people as minimally as possible. Magic… makes that possible, a lot of the time.”

Laurie fell silent as well, strolling along at a leisurely pace as they made their way back to the castle. "I'm gonna head to the kitchens," he said. "Meet back at the Treehouse?"

Laurie gave him a wave and headed up through the large archway leading inside, and disappeared into the Great Hall amongst a swathe of black-robed students. He glanced around a few times to see if Qingying was following him and then slipped into the kitchens.
