Eyebrows jumping, Laurie complied and tugged it over his head.

“Touch here,” Qingying pointed at a spot at the side of his ribs.
The ‘canvas’ of the jumper appeared to extend – but Laurie could tell the jumper itself did not grow longer – covering his fingers and toes. An illustrated anatomical diagram materialised, bones and muscles and various systems fading in and out of existence depending on which one Laurie focused on, and names emerged where his gaze rested. Fluids seemed to flow, and everything moved and adjusted as he moved. The style wasn’t realistic (because that could be difficult for some people to look at, and this was Christmas, not Halloween), but clear. It was obviously related to Laurie reading medical textbooks, and was also a small joke.

“It’ll fade after you’re not looking at it anymore.” He didn’t say so, but it wasn't permanently visible so people couldn't tease him.

"Whoa." He started laughing, flexing his fingers in delight. "That is cool."

It wasn’t a style that was overly realistic – but accurate, rather like diagrams in textbooks – and could be used by others to learn anatomy. More words appeared as multiple gazes travelled over it, and words could appear all at once for comparison. Mahra’s jumper had a similar but different effect when touched – personalised to him.

“A lot of people wear Christmas jumpers around here, so I thought I’d make a few,” he smiled as he mimed knitting.

"Mahra'll go wild," Laurie grinned. "Thank you. Seriously." He reached out and squeezed Qingying's elbow.

“You’re welcome,” Qingying smiled, eyes curving.
“Now it’s about time for breakfast; let’s go.”

They headed to the Great Hall and Laurie met up with some of his friends. The day after the incident with Fergus, an announcement had been made at breakfast (and each Head of House also reminded their students) that name-calling and discrimination would not be tolerated. While not announced, Laurie heard through fellow students that Fergus had been removed from the Quidditch team.

Qingying said ‘see you’ and wandered off. Soon, it became apparent through conversation that Laurie’s other friends had also received charmed, knitted pieces of clothing, all bearing images of things they enjoyed and personalised animated effects. No one knew where they came from – but it wasn’t the first time items or food had appeared, and all sorts of things happened at Hogwarts.
While what piece of clothing the person received seemed to be random, there was a method to the madness – Qingying made jumpers for those unlikely to be sent one, such as due to absent family or a foreign family likely without knowledge of Britain’s Christmas jumpers, and socks, scarves, or hats for ones likely to receive a jumper or had one already. Brandt, for example, got a pair of socks bearing life-like horses.

A week after, during the final week of term, when many students began receiving Christmas presents, there was a rumour (not well-known, because it was hardly gossip as juicy as who was going out with who and did you know this happened) that some students received presents without knowing where they came from. There didn’t seem to be a common factor linking them; they were from different years, and different Houses. 'Unusual' wasn't really so at Hogwarts, and soon people moved on.

Qingying didn’t raise any of these topics for discussion; he wasn’t a gossiper, anyway.

During the announcement, Laurie kept Flint's eyes, and before the students disbanded, he saluted him briefly with one finger. He'd already handled the situation via Shar, and Fergus spent the remainder of his holiday at St. Mungo's.

Laurie didn't bring up the gifts with Qingying, though he certainly noticed and had determined their origins.

Finally, the end of term rolled around and Laurie boarded the train with Brandt, Qingying tucked safely and invisibly out of sight.
