Qingying’s hand moved down and his delicate fingers hovered over Laurie’s scraped knuckles. His other hand lifted to float near the scratches on Laurie’s neck. He looked to Laurie for permission to heal them.

He pressed his lips together and nodded a couple times.

He moved his fingers over the wounds, murmuring ‘Yu’, and they closed up, without pain, warmth, or traces of scars. The bruises dissipated, leaving his skin as it had been before.
“I’ll teach you this spell later,” Qingying said with a small smile as he lowered his hands to his lap. He had given tips to Laurie for spells he'd been learning, but this was the first time he'd offered to teach him new ones.

"Really?" That caught his interest and he sat up, brushing his hair out of his eyes. "How do you do it?" he glanced at his knuckles, curious.

He placed a finger over his lips, smile slightly playful.
“You’ll need to learn the characters to tackle foreign spells. First you need to head back to the castle and catch dinner, and then attend to your detention in the owlery.” Of course Qingying wouldn’t have let Laurie miss it and get into more trouble.
“Later,” he said, the promise in his tone. “I’ll teach you.”

Laurie was packing up his things at last and he rose to his feet, looking up at Qingying and nodding. "OK. Later," he smiled faintly.

He turned around, after shouldering the small duffel he'd taken with him, an eyebrow raised. "Yeah?"

His voice was soft, but unusually solemn, eyes dimmed as if pained by the thought of it.

“Nobody deserves Crucio… Nobody.”
He gave a small smile. “Do you understand…?”
The smile drifted away, leaving behind only aged layers of sentiment.

“It is a terrible thing.”

Laurie's eyes glazed over for a second, not exactly agreeing, but he nodded solemnly.

There was a reason why kids weren't held to the same standards as adults, and despite all of the things that Laurie clearly understood, the higher-level nuances of his actions weren't entirely transparent to him. A split-second decision could have changed everything, averted only by circumstances. At least he appeared aware, now. Maybe it had to happen that way. Give an angry, scared child a magic weapon powered by rash, unfiltered will and things could go south very quickly.

"I was angry. Fergus didn't deserve it."

Qingying acknowledged his words quietly, with a blink. He didn’t expect Laurie to fully understand all of the reasons why he’d said that (he hadn’t even explained), and likely Laurie wouldn’t completely agree, but it was a seed – a seed that was now present.

It was an adult’s job to sow seeds, and to nurture the sprouts already present. Qingying was a very nurturing person; he didn’t believe small branches should be harshly cut off, but instead guided to grow in the appropriate direction. Character traits and talents already present should be nurtured.

Sometimes, when someone didn’t understand, it was necessary to tell them not to do something, and allow them to understand later. It was hardly appropriate to not tell a child ‘do not touch fire’ until they were old enough to understand all of the science behind why. While Qingying preferred to have someone understand first, there were always priorities. Laurie’s awareness was a good response.

“Nobody deserves it,” he murmured, and then he smiled softly.

Laurie just shrugged, unwilling to disagree over the rising sense of shame hot on his neck.

He closed his eyes, still smiling softly, as if he was telling a story. “You see, we want to hurt people when they do something, but nobody deserves to be hurt – it is a choice that other people make; a choice to hurt them. Causing pain, hurting another person… it doesn’t always change anything, doesn’t stop or protect someone. Not necessarily - especially if something is already done. Often, it’s just because we want to hurt them… It’s a…” He didn’t say the word, and changed the sentence: “It is a choice that people make.”

"Actions should have consequences," Laurie replied quietly. "If you hurt someone on purpose you shouldn't cry when it happens to you."

He shook his head. “I am not scolding you… Just…” Well, Laurie wouldn’t really get that, would he?
“It is my opinion that we should not only consider ‘what should happen to someone when they do something’, but also consider what we should do. I do not believe people deserve to be hurt, as ‘deserve’ would almost seem as if it’s the natural law of the universe, when it’s something people choose. Not just making it about the other person places us with responsibility – and that is important.” He gave a small smile and his shoulders became more relaxed, his expression softening in case Laurie didn’t understand or didn’t agree.
“It’s… okay..."

He listened, eyes focused on a spot behind Qingying's shoulder and not on his face. "So you think people should just get away with it?"

Hurting someone isn’t the only way – it also depends on circumstances. Also, it isn’t always our place to punish.
It is important to distinguish between an intent to protect and an intent to punish; they are not the same.”

“It’s exactly because nothing’s happening that it’s important to formulate your own principles,” Qingying smiled and lifted a hand. “Of course, when something is happening, not everything always goes accordingly, but at least they’re there… better than nothing.”
