"Hmm," he tilted his head. Yes Qingying did that a lot. "So what is it that you disliked about just now?" He raised the index finger of his left hand. "What I asked? The way I asked it? Looking down at you while too close? Giving you a bunch of questions you were not sure how to answer or didn't want to consider? Unsure of my intentions? Please don't give me 'all of them' because that makes things difficult and unclear." He gave a vigorous shake of his head.

He laughed at that, short and sharp and slightly hysterical. "You got stuck with a real trainwreck, huh?" he shook his head. "Intentions, I guess. That just sort of ties into everything else. This whole place is so different from everything that I know," he started all of a sudden. "I've had to force myself to ignore every instinct I have just to pretend to be normal."

Qingying nodded quietly while looking ahead through the trees.

"I know that what I lived occurred in isolation, and I know that this community is healthy, regardless of outlier occurrences. I'm not dumb. But it doesn't matter. The split second the alarm goes off in my mind, that's it." He flicked his finger at his temple.

"Mhm..." Qingying lifted his knees and rested his arms on them, gaze on the river but not quite seeing. Maybe he understood.

Laurie just threw out a hand, signaling he was finished talking.

"It's probably not that isolated - more occur than people see or assume." He turned his head to look at him and smiled a little. "It's hard," he agreed, and then he gazed at the river again. "It takes time, experience, trust - in oneself too - and a lot of love and kindness from those around us. Everyone deserves that - kindness, love, gentleness." He looked over at Laurie. "Even you." His tone was rather light.

“It’s okay,” Qingying’s gaze returned to the river. “I think though, that people who lie will lie whether you ask them nicely or not, and people you ask to do or not do something will do or not do them whether you ask them nicely or not.” He gave him a sideways look with a smile that was both mischievous and also bore hints of a smirk. “If that’s the case, why not ask nicely? Sometimes nicely gives a higher chance of an agreeable response.”

"You're acting as though I've never tried," Laurie said flatly. "You really think Fergus is gonna quit just because I ask nicely? At least intimidation works on everyone."

“I wasn’t talking about Fergus,” Qingying explained with a shake of his head. “But no – intimidation doesn’t work on everyone. Sometimes taking a step back provides you with many steps forward. Intimidation may work on some people, but they may seek help from others. If you have too many people against you, you won’t be able to manage, and you’ll put your friends in danger. Can you guarantee you’ll be able to be with the ones you care about and protect them? You can’t. Why bring more danger to the table with anger?” He raised his hands. “By the way, I don’t mean ‘taking a step back’ as in ‘going backwards’; there’s a Chinese saying, which is taking a step back in an argument. Sometimes that brings better results – even if they’re calculated results.”

"No," Laurie said firmly, all of a sudden. "No, you're right. And I don't want to be the kind of person who intimidates people. Guys like Fergus, they treat you like shit to make themselves feel better. Because they're scared they're worth nothing. And I'm sorry, that I resorted to that just because I was scared, too. Goddamn it's been an exhausting day."

It was hard to forget he was a kid, sometimes. His vocabulary was a great deal more advanced than his peers, and he really was much taller than the other eleven year olds, although he'd started out malnourished. All limbs and no fat to speak of, but he was getting there, and he was starting to catch up to Einda Swift, the tallest person in their year, by the time Christmas rolled around.

The past few months of integration for Laurie had been hard, but at last, he ended with a solemn: "Thank you." And then he started laughing. "I guess, I guess asking nicely works on me. Small world."

Laurie just curled up suddenly right into him, wrapping his arms around Qingying's waist and burying his head in his side.

Qingying never forgot that Laurie was a kid. In a way, everyone was a child to Qingying. Even himself.
Although he tried his best to treat Laurie as an equal - to not patronise or be condescending, he still recognised him as a child. He knew Laurie would likely always be a child to him; not seen as someone young when he became an adult, but still someone he cared about.

“It seems you do like hugs, then, Laurie,” Qingying murmured, wrapping his arms around him.

“You don’t need to hide your tears,” he said as he stroked his hair. “We need every emotion – if we cry, it means we need to. Even anger; it is not a bad thing, but it should not cloud judgement or control us.” He paused as his fingers continued to move gently through Laurie’s curls. “Nobody deserves to be hurt, so of course I won’t hit you,” he said quietly.

Laurie hastily wiped at his eyes. "No, I'm, I'm fine. I'm fine, sorry." He hadn't been aware he'd been thinking about that until Qingying mentioned it, and he turned bright red behind his hands. "What I did was bad," he mumbled, as if in explanation.

“My mother used to have my tutors and the staff of the house punish me for everything I did wrong – that didn’t mean it was right to do, or that anything bad deserves that,” Qingying said with an explanatory tone.

“Ah, I mean I do not think it’s necessary to hurt people just because they did something wrong. Also, not every wrongdoing needs a harsh scolding – sometimes the person just doesn’t know, or they did not mean to. It depends on the individual what they need. Sometimes it’s just a word of correction.”
