Amortentia

Post by Qingying » Mon Dec 11, 2017 7:18 am

1998. Hogwarts.

During the next three weeks, Qingying kept himself visible to Laurie, and slept in the form of a creature similar to a very fluffy white ermine curled in a ball (but did not take other forms). Shuang could shrink into a bright ball of light and then entered and exited Qingying’s chest, and Qingying told him the orb survived by absorbing a very small amount of energy from the environment. When Shuang was visible to others, floating around Laurie or resting on his shoulder, other students didn’t think much of it, as there were all sorts of magical lights and pets. Laurie also found that Ozzy and the orb were familiar with each other, often resting together, the orb providing warmth.

Not long after they met, Laurie discovered in a class his wand could not be disarmed by classmates, but Kardat had simply said there was a spell on it (as it had belonged to someone else) and it wasn’t a big deal. Laurie knew that Qingying could use magic, but Qingying didn’t demonstrate anything particularly outstanding or unusual. At least now he knew why there were occasionally random groups of animals or owls – it was an invisible Qingying’s doing, and other students thought it was something that ‘just happened’ at Hogwarts. While Qingying interacted with the animals, he rarely touched them unless they were tame and sought the attention, simply happy to be with them.

Generally cheerful, Qingying spent most of his time simply comfortably watching what was going on around him. He had a way of gazing at people that did not make them aware, and he didn’t appear to desire using his invisibility to purposefully intrude on privacy, such as listening in on secret conversations between students under the staircase, and instead usually only approached them when he was curious about a book they were reading. Still, he seemed aware of what people were doing around him, and caught snippets of more important conversation.

He was curious and attended classes to quietly listen to anything he did not know, and sought Laurie’s permission to cast a spell which would allow him to hear, or also see, the lesson taking place through Laurie as he tended to animals and plants within the school grounds. Qingying usually minded his own business when Laurie was in class or studying, rarely directly disturbing him, not due to self-restraint, but simply due to contentedly reading books of his own. These books ranged from DIY candles to magical books in foreign languages to modern muggle reference books. Qingying had galleons stored away inside the Treehouse and had taught a few owls to deliver muggle newspapers and books from wizard dealers he knew. Sometimes he asked to read a book after Laurie had finished with it, and took books (invisibly) from the library and returned them later. Also, he struck up correspondence with Mistletoe Manduke, taking an interest in the Bifacetransferer’s further development.

Qingying appeared to enjoy nature and could be found lying on the grass by the Treehouse, seeming always aware of when Laurie approached. He drank tea rather than coffee, and it became obvious he didn’t need to eat. When he did nibble on food in the Great Hall, he never ate meat, and the meals he made did not contain them either, but were hearty and warm, and he also enjoyed making desserts. Qingying gently prompted Laurie to taste the food (without explicitly asking him to ‘slow down’) to find out whether there were textures or foods he preferred over others.

When a subject in conversation drifted to something he knew or a previous experience, he was happy to talk about himself – especially if it was something that he thought important to ‘make sense’ for Laurie, such as ‘how this Treehouse came to exist’ on the first night. He was fine with talking about past events, but didn’t go into detail when it came to people, and preferred happy memories. He didn’t disturb Laurie when he was with friends, and while not made obvious, he never touched him. He didn’t ask Laurie anything about himself, but made Mahra toys and sent him treats and books or items such as fluffy blankets, depending on what Laurie thought would be suitable.

Baring a generally comfortable aura and rarely surprised by anything, Qingying still occasionally possessed a certain tension that seemed out-of-place. Sometimes he flinched when a person reached towards (something near) him too quickly, and other times he didn’t care. When tension reached his facial features, there were a few times he wandered off on his own for an hour or so, and returned with a smile - or also a cake.

Over the next few weeks or so, Laurie gradually grew to trust that Qingying's intentions weren't malicious, and by extension, trust Qingying himself. This trust was the smallest of leaves buried amidst the ruined, scorched rubble of his mind, that needed careful cultivation to grow and could be easily blown away into the dark ether of the sky by only the slightest of winds.

As Qingying offered Laurie many things, he found that Laurie as well tried to do the same for him. He encouraged Qingying to bake (which made him happy) by requesting treats. He provided books from the library that he thought Qingying would be interested in, laid in piles on the table inside 'their' Treehouse.

He gave Qingying his space when he sensed it necessary and focused his discussions on topics Qingying enjoyed, straying away from those he didn't with nuanced ease. Laurie was very good at reading people, and Qingying found he himself was among those people, despite his attempts at presenting a certain persona to the world. When he offered Qingying items it was tea, rather than coffee, and hearty fruits and vegetables rather than meat when the Hogwarts feasts provided something he thought Qin might like.

He allowed Qingying to listen in on his classes, as that seemed to provide him with enjoyment, and simply spent time with him, finding this time to be, against all odds, peaceful.

Laurie was still rough around the edges, and his ire was keen to raise. He swore frequently and held a nihilistic view of the world, with limited ability to understand his own emotions and at times, the emotions of others as well. He was still suspicious of every-and-anyone, with the spare exception of Kardat Blacksworth, his professor and the Head of Slytherin, and Brandt Grayson and Einda Swift, his only friends.

Slowly, though, as the holidays crept closer, Laurie gradually began to withdraw from his friends, spending more and more time in the Treehouse instead.

Qingying was aware that many things Laurie did because he wanted to make him happy, and that made him uncomfortable as he didn’t want the child to do something, accept something, or not do something, because of him. It was related to why he hadn’t wanted to tell Laurie what he thought of him back when Laurie first saw him – he didn’t want to influence the child’s actions so. But he had also become aware that it was difficult for Laurie to act otherwise, and he’d learned in the owlery that the child came from an environment where kindness was likely not, but trades existed. So he accepted some of Laurie’s need to reciprocate, but still observed him carefully to learn what he actually liked and what actions were due to need, and quietly adjusted himself accordingly.

Valuing honesty, Qingying tried to not hide his personality from Laurie, and while he didn’t tell him everything (such as, I am your wand, or information about previous owners), he never outright lied. This was partly because, unlike Laurie, he knew he would likely be with him for a long time, so decided to be honest from the very beginning.

After becoming sure that Laurie’s intentions of keeping him around were not due to wanting to use him, Qingying revealed more of himself and his magic - that he was an animagus, that he took many forms, and that his spells were as varied as his interests - as well as his actual usefulness, happily reading along as Laurie studied and giving him tips for spells or exercises for improvement. He only made physical contact when he was sure Laurie wanted it, and offered to teach him instruments if he desired to learn. In mid-November, he managed to get Laurie to join in with his daily morning stretching routine.

Always supportive of Laurie’s relationships with his friends, Qingying sometimes suggested Laurie go have dinner with them or to study together, but never pushed, and as Christmas grew nearer and Laurie drew away from them, had grown concerned that Laurie would stop spending time with them. Qingying was not perfect; his own emotional capability was lacking, and Laurie needed others to learn from. Those friendships were good for him, and of course Qingying wanted for him everything that was good. He was pondering what to do about this when that little incident occurred.

And he was furious. Qingying knew immediately something was wrong as the very storm clouds themselves in the air crackled and sizzled with heated energy. All that made him inhuman raged and spread out, affecting everyone around him like a virus until his bad mood echoed all the way across Hogwarts Castle. He'd stalked off the grounds after a thorough lecture from several professors and a whopping six months of detention to hide in the Treehouse, intending to be alone.

Laurie’s rage tore through his mind, gashing leaves and ripping up roots. Whether he was inside or outside of the wand didn’t matter, and unbeknowst to Laurie, the closer they became, the more he felt.

What was this? He applied a flood of mundane and magical techniques to control his emotions, one hand over his forehead, out of sight of Laurie, heart pounding.

Qingying didn’t talk to Laurie while he was being chastised, and by the time he reached the Treehouse, outwardly, just as before, Qingying was balanced. He went over to the kitchen area to make tea.

Laurie entered the Treehouse like a hurricane, his aura chaotic and unfocused and bitterly cold. He instantly went into the bathroom and shut the door, and then hid in the bath itself behind the curtain to swipe at his eyes.

The bathroom wasn’t the most comfortable place to be in.

Qingying made tea and sat on the bed with a cup, giving Laurie some time before he either decided Laurie was in there for too long, or he came out before that.

Calm calm calm calm calm. Qingying sipped his tea. He had to grasp his own emotions (while Laurie was in there dealing with his feelings which affected Qingying’s feelings) before approaching him.

Finally, after Shuang had done many many many circles of the room and finally settled on the bed, Qingying rose and headed to the bathroom door.

“Laurie,” he said softly.
The bathroom door was conveniently permeable to sound!

The contents of this Treehouse was often changed for convenience.

"Do you know what you're sorry for?" His voice was soft. Not scolding; asking.

The bathroom door creaked open slowly and Laurie emerged, straight-backed and red-nosed, but stoic.
