- Mutation. Energy Manipulation. Everything is made of energy. Just as sight is a sense, the perception of energy is a sense to Qingying. As beings of energy move and affect the world, they disrupt the energy around them like ripples on a lake. The energies of mutants are different from those of humans, so Qingying is able to identify mutants, and as the energy of each mutant is distinct from another, Qingying perceives an impression of their abilities. Additional, concentrated observation provides further comprehension.
Emotions also manifest as energy, and as Qingying perceives them, it can be difficult to prevent energy from affecting himself when among large groups of people experiencing strong emotions. Through energy control, Qingying affects his environment, encouraging the growth of plants, and shaping walls or water. He is capable of altering himself to an extent, enhancing or reducing senses and bodily functions, and significantly modify his appearance, but cannot turn himself into a being of steel or fire.
Connected to nature, the perception and control of nature’s energy is the most instinctive to Qingying. Nature can also sometimes react to him without his intent. Qingying can take in energy from the environment, which reduces his need for food and drink, and can survive by absorbing energy, in a state of lowered functionality, for a few weeks. Through manipulating energy, Qingying can increase the rate of an affliction's recovery. Currently, small broken bones take roughly two to three weeks, and larger bones take three weeks to two months. His own recovery can be further accelerated by utilising his lifespan. All of the pain caused by the injury he was supposed to feel in the future will be compacted into the length of time he spends healing an injury (which means he tends to increase the length of time, or heal in several sessions, if he is able). He does not use this except during emergencies.
To be connected to life and energy is to be disallowed from harming it. If Qingying purposefully harms another person, the injury is reflected on his body in the same proportion. By using his lifespan, Qingying can heal others. He does not know the exact amount that is used, only whether it was a small, moderate, or large amount, and estimates based on previous interactions. The more he practiced the use of this ability, the less lifespan that was required. Currently, a small cut may necessitate a few minutes of lifespan, while the gravest injuries may require weeks or more. The severity of an injury is proportional to the amount of lifespan used.
Mutants around him are aware of his healing process, so Qingying is generally asked to alleviate pain and increase the rate of recovery without using lifespan. They have also been assured there is no need to be reluctant if he offers to heal a light ailment, or a heavier one partially. If a person is in a life-threatening state of emergency, Qingying will heal them enough to stabilise them. Accelerating more than that is unnecessary; there may be another case of emergency that requires that portion of lifespan. Qingying had been quite liberal in the past, and after multiple reminders through the decades, now utilises this more logical manner of thinking to (attempt to be) sufficiently conservative.
- Appearance. Qingying’s appearance differs depending on his company and environment. When required, such as to minimise the risk of being recognised when applying his abilities, or as a condition for fulfilling a goal, he modifies his physical features. When with allied mutants, his appearance is that of his true one.
Qingying is slender, with long white hair that flows down his back and features so feminine many are unsure he is truly male. His right eye is azure, while his left is a deep gold and pupil-less. A marking of not-quite circles and curved lines is on his forehead.
He is frequently dressed in hanfu. His attire almost never changes (when it does, it is spontaneous and greatly varied), with a white inner layer formed of two sides wrapped over each other and tied with a cloth belt, and a light grey outer layer, open at the front. Both flowing pieces are made of an abundance of material, and have long sleeves. Sometimes, embroidery may be present on the fabric. His voice is mellow, and students do not recall him ever having to raise it.
When in an environment where humans are present, his eyes are a shade of light blue found in humans, and the marking on his forehead disappears. His long hair is tied back and appears far shorter when working in the city, with the tips of the strands falling just below his back.
Anything Else? Everything is made of energy, and control of it was a natural capability of every person in Qingying’s world.
After receiving private tuition from a young age in academic subjects, instruments, dance, and martial arts, Qingying was sent to a school on a quiet mountain due to his weakening constitution. The school focused on cultivation of the self, and as energy control was a skill, it was one of the major areas of development for each student. Unlike conventional schools, older students would teach younger ones, and students could stay for their entire lives, striving for improvement or finding answers and themselves. The combination of environment and the longevity of those who practiced energy control provided significant improvement to Qingying’s health.
Twelve years of studying, teaching, descending and ascending the mountain to assist those in need, practicing martial arts, dance, painting, and music later, Qingying departed from the mountain school at the age of twenty to teach children.
In the subsequent year, adversaries opened a portal and sent Qingying to another world. Unknown to him at the time, he had become what this world would come to refer to as a ‘mutant’.
He soon discovered that what was so natural to him was aberrant and threatening, consequently hiding away visible indications. Unable to understand the new language and not knowing where to seek aid, he spent two years alone, observing, encouraging the growth of plants when he could not acquire sustenance, and learning to survive in this world.
He determined performing was one method of earning currency, as art, dance, and music spanned across worlds. Gradually, as he accumulated experiences and improved his communicative abilities, he learned of the rest of the planet. Long stretches of time on ships and seeking other lands followed. As the energy of mutants and humans differed, he sought out a number of mutants as he travelled. He found familiarity in the Taoist temples of China, and settled in each region of Earth for varying lengths of time, immersing himself in cultures and forming friendships, sometimes for a day, other times for years.
The attribute that Qingying found was perhaps the biggest difference between Earth and his world was that Earth, while beautiful and idyllic in places, was also filled with conflict. People warred over resources, land, beliefs, and purposefully caused chaos as a means to an end. Status, servitude, oppression, resistance and their effects wound through numerous lives. He began to position himself, sometimes through utilising his abilities, and other times through learning, networking, and the right events and individuals, to make a difference. An earlier end to a conflict, the passing of a law, contributing to constructions of dams, stopping those who caused harm, mutant or human, retrieving the injured from battlefields, travelling to aid in cleaning oil spills in the ocean, urging elephants away from poachers, and tipping off those who would act; he studied and practiced intensely, because with knowledge and ability, one could create change.
As a being that lived longer than the other people of this world, Qingying took on various appearances and false identities, sometimes to realise goals and to prevent recognition, and other times to not allow others to know that he did not age as they did. Throughout the years, Qingying aided other mutants, utilising his sense and control of energy to understand and guide individuals in learning the use of their abilities, as well as supporting them to live as part of this world. Maintaining a partiality for teaching, Qingying shared knowledge while being continuously keen to learn from anyone around him.
A younger mutant who could seep into electrical systems and alter data without a trace, as well as a crime he committed, arrived with the digital age. Qingying provided him with assistance after confirming his lack of truly malicious intent, and years later, he complied with Qingying’s requests to create false, overlapping identities. Using this method, Qingying studied with a younger identity while appearing as an older one elsewhere, until the older identity retired, and the younger, now qualified, would be rotated in. His mutant acquaintance is currently Independent, but cooperates with the X-men when required. Qingying bakes him extravagant cakes.
‘Euphemeria li Qingying’ was a name Qingying had not used for over 250 years; after realising he was different, his true name had quickly been hidden away. As records of this name did not exist, Qingying chose to return to his true name and appearance for this life.
Born August 12th, 1980, Euphemeria li Qingying completed high school level classes in the UK at the age of 15. (Having no interest in pretending to be a child for fifteen years, Qingying was neither home-schooled nor did he take any exams. He ‘stepped into’ this identity at this ‘age’; everything within the fifteen years is false, flawless data.) After three years of undergraduate, studying Psychological and Behavioural Sciences at Cambridge, Qingying entered medical school, intercalating a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, and six years later, relocated to the US to begin a five-year combined residency in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, while retiring the older identity (who had been a teacher) he had been using in the UK.
Upon completing his residency, Qingying spent four years qualifying as a Physical Therapist and participating in an additional residency in Pediatric Physical Therapy. Then, he trained for two years, becoming a certified teacher. After this, he went to school for another two years, studying Creative and Expressive Arts Therapy.
Upon deciding that the mission of the Xavier Institute was a cause he would support after meeting Charles, Qingying became a member of the faculty in 2013, drawing on his experiences of mutants, children, and education to assist where he could, such as by aiding new teachers as they structured curricula, offering himself as a physician and physical therapist, using his abilities for construction or repairs, sharing and learning from students and staff, giving everybody cakes, and, occasionally, encouraging the continued growth of a drooping plant in the grounds.
Qingying has provided talks and workshops involving performing arts and health topics at schools and within the community for numerous years. Presently, Qingying continues this, in-between teaching part-time at Xavier Institute of Higher Learning, and working in the Bronx as a Physical Therapist. Qingying’s energy control can smoothen flows, disperse obstruction, and encourage healing; while he does not do so to the point of arousing suspicion, Qingying quietly increases the rate of recovery of his patients.
During the three days spanning the end of a month to the beginning of another, and the three days in the middle of a month, Qingying is always absent as his body becomes weaker, and he proceeds to the countryside alone to absorb nature’s energy and rebalance his health. When not teaching or working, Qingying can often be found seeking the company of animals and nature, or watching the shifts of the clouds and moon, perhaps with an instrument, book, or ink wash painting by his side.
