Anything Else? The Ancient Greeks called them sirens.
Dangerous water creatures inhabiting the island Sirenuse, near Paestum, they are said to lure all manner of creatures with their devastating, enchanting song, leading them to their death to crash over the rocks. They're beautiful and irresistible, and all who hear their cry are drawn in by the lull and promise of paradise.
In reality, these beings are Veela. In their own language, Ennosidas. Their world is secret, spanning millennia, and highly insular. Immersed in snowglobe privacy, those within are not permitted to love those who walk the earth, and those who do are sentenced to eternal exile.
Leda'ryse ni'Caoi'lainn made the unfortunate, and irreversible mistake of falling for an outsider, a vagrant wizard named Kol Hallin who saved her life when she was captured by Muggles threatening to gut her and study her. Her docile temperament prevented her from orchestrating her own escape and through pure chance, Kol, a member of the crew and eternal drifter, intervened.
Full Veela didn't just appear to anyone, but she was curious. Much moreso than her kin, and it was to her detriment.Kol could not help but love her, even when it drove him mad with it over time. It progressed soon to violence, and ultimately culminated in a frenzied, frantic episode that left her dead. Bright red blood against pale, glittering skin. Kol was imprisoned by the Ennosidas, and his fate remains unknown.
Their children, Mahra and Laurie, were outsiders. They weren't permitted in Sirenuse, so they learned to fend for themselves. Laurie was spared the mentally addled condition of his heritage, developing a sharp mind and sharper constitution, but Mahra was not. Slowly, as the years passed, Mahra became engulfed by the insanity and they were both taken in by St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
While at eleven, Laurie received his Hogwarts letter, Mahra, a year later, did not. Laurie was immediately sorted into Slytherin. Many things could be said about the house, but it was the house of Survivors, and Slytherin clannishness served him very well. He excelled academically, isolating himself, and focused throughout the years on learning as much as possible about this new world. In the summers, he returned to the hospital to visit Mahra, who received an alternate education.
During his final years at Hogwarts, he chose to pursue NEWTs in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Transfiguration, Arithmancy and Potions to prepare for his future career as a hitwizard, and attended Kardat Blacksworth's Advanced Magical Protection curriculum as well, which at the time was only available to ten students.
After graduation, Laurie spent the next twelve years working for the Ministry of Magic, in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. His return to Hogwarts now is shrouded in mystery, especially given his exceptional track record, but upon Kardat Blacksworth's promotion to Deputy Headmaster, Minerva McGonagall had little issue filling his old slot.
Information about the Veela is rare, but what wizarding historians have managed to gather up is located here.
Laurie and Qingying (his wand, which possesses a spirit similar to a horcrux) work very well with one another, having personalities that are extremely suited. Qingying's gentleness balances out Laurie's tense caution. He is highly intelligent, but suffers from a great deal of intrapersonal turmoil. He is easily irritated, moody, and a chronic insomniac. He has a poor relationship with intoxicating substances.
Additionally, most of Laurie's visible skin contains a series of winding, geometrical patterns in a variety of colors, including his neck and hands. Some of his tattoos have meaning, but most are carefully designed to conceal a number of magically obtained scars. Amongst them are equations, chemical formulas, constellations, animals, symbols, and more.
