From the Greek for State Magic, Katástasi Mageía is the oldest known wizarding school, established with the completion of the Athenian Parthenon in 438 BC. It survived the downfall of an empire and appears today as a tourist destination for muggles to peruse, though its true nature is hidden. Students who enter its boundary lines see instead a flourishing series of structures, all cast in ancient style.
The school was constructed in an open fashion, with few rooftops or enclosing structures other than the individual bungalows where students sleep. Rain or shine, they're exposed to the elements and this is an integral part of the magical community in Greece. Magic is tied to the gods, to each of their attributes, and to the elements of the world.
The students train and practice for a sport called kínisi spathí or moving sword, which, like Quidditch is played on broomsticks, but unlike Quidditch is an aggressive full-contact sport which emphasizes the Greek spirit of warrior-prowess. While one hand controls the broom, the other hand must wield a large sword (in academic settings this is typically replaced with a safer mikróspathí or short-sword).
The school has twelve strands, named after the gods. Traditionally six were masculine and six were feminine, but that has changed with the times and now all students are intermingled between them.
Upon their arrival, students hold out their hands to a twelve statues, and imbued with the spirits of the gods. Their hands are taken and a strand is twined around their wrist, binding them to their fate. Students who disgrace their strands find that they blacken and fall off, and this results in their expulsion from the school.
Students sleep in bungalows with streaks of color accordant to their strand, wearing uniforms that are painted to match and adorning the strand logo. The uniforms are much sleeker than usual wizarding fashion, with a simple pair of black pants and a black long-sleeved shirt cut into ribbons with strips of color along the sleeves and at the collar.
When a student does well or exceeds, the megáloníma which adorn the fixtures of the school's main building glow and lengthen, but when they detract or break rules, or in other ways dishonor the spirit of the gods whom they represent, the megáloníma shorten and fall away. At the end of the year, the longest strand wins the school cup.
