When Scorpius was six, his mother read him a story. There was a deer, a rabbit, some other animals, and a river. Scorpius doesn’t remember much of it; what he recalls are sitting in his mother’s arms, her warm, sweet smell, her voice, and her hair, soft and wavy, tickling his ear. She was frequently in bed, and their lives were quiet to conserve her strength, but Scorpius knew his parents loved their family; loved him. Even his father, as awkward as he was sometimes, tried, in his own way. Perhaps his father’s devotion to his mother was what rubbed off on Scorpius to make him quite the romantic.
Having little interaction with others, books were his window to the world. He spent hours emptying shelves, waiting excitedly at literal windows for his next owl-ordered tome, and counted down the days to Hogwarts from the moment he heard of it. Unbeknownst to him, rumours had begun multiplying as soon as his mother’s pregnancy was known by a few: “The Malfoys couldn’t bear children; desperate for a powerful heir and to prevent the end of the Malfoy line, they used a Time-Turner to send his mother back in time - Scorpius is the child of Voldemort.”
Hidden away for a decade, Scorpius was shocked to discover how different the world was from the warm fireplace their family converged around in armchairs every Saturday evening. He bore his parents’ examples in mind: No matter his mother’s physical condition, she always greeted him with a smile. He learnt from her, optimism and fortitude. His father, whose opinions of people could appear decidedly low – but, in some ways, realistic – showed him tenacity, and, by virtue of his mother, the power of love and courage.
A few sharp words were not going to quell his enthusiasm, anyway!
His father repeatedly tells him to be more brave, and Scorpius tries. His father is not cruel; he does not expect too much of him, as his own father did, but Scorpius supposes he is not perfect.
At Hogwarts, he has more opportunities to learn, and his best friend to share the treats his mother sends.
Sometimes, when he’s alone and unoccupied by studies, he wonders if the rumours are true.
Then, he’d take out three bags of Pepper Imps. Nothing to dissipate a mood like smoke coming out of your ears!
