The first of them to go, Patience crept inside, eyes wide, and hugged himself.

Qingying had been about to suggest Lane go first to watch for Patience on the other side.
“Do you… want me to go with you?” He asked Patience, and extended a hand for him to take as the child was unlikely to nod or shake his head.

Qingying gently lead Patience out of the fireplace and invited Lane in with an open palm.
“You go first, Mr. Foster. Don’t go off on your own on the other side; we’ll meet you in a few seconds.”

"Yeah, yeah," he rolled his eyes and took some of the powder. "The Dear Deer Beer pub!" he called out loudly and flung the powder down. He disappeared with a loud bang.

Qingying lead Patience back in. “Throw it down after I say the name, okay?” He looked down at Patience, and then said ‘Dear Deer Bear pub’, before giving Patience a quick nod and tossing down his powder.

They emerged on the other side, in a side room of the pub. Qingying immediately checked for Lane, and then looked down at Patience with a smile, not removing his hand but holding the child’s lightly enough for Patience to remove his own if he wanted to.

He didn't, yet, but they spotted Lane up ahead, tangled in some Christmas lights. "Bloody--feckin--"

Qingying smiled at the sight and then looked down to check on Patience again - he hadn't released his hand in case the child needed reassurance in an unfamiliar environment.

"No magic outside of school, remember," he reminded them lightly while stepping towards Lane, and raised a hand to have the lights untangle.

The door - leading to the main area of the pub and through which a few seated, robed individuals were visible - was to his left.
"Come on," he gestured as he turned towards it.

It didn’t appear to bother him, and after checking with the bartender whether the address was correct, Qingying decided to walk as Freddie Bowie’s house was less than five minutes away.

They went down the road, passing houses with sloped roofs inside trimmed hedges and wooden garden gates, Qingying appreciating the slow flow of traffic which allowed chirps of birds to reach their ears, until they reached the residence.

Lane blabbed the whole way there, making rude commentary on their surroundings while Patience peered curiously at everything, almost tripping over his own feet once or twice in the process. The gate to Bowes's house creaked and snapped up Patience's attention promptly. The house itself appeared as though leaned over to one side, with metal, concrete and brick slapped together haphazardly to form its structure. Clothes hung off of ziplines and a tilted chimney billowed smoke which smelled faintly of cinnamon in the air. It was cozy, and definitively magical.

Qingying opened the gate and knocked on the door. Although he didn’t look at Lane, he was always aware of what he was doing.

Patience stepped in silently after them, and then walked right up to the doorbell and pushed it before they had time to do anything.

Within a few seconds the wooden door creaked open and a stout, burly man in his early 60s greeted them with a kind, wrinkle-eyed smile and a large smattering of freckles across a weather-beaten face. He had short black hair and tattoos of thick, winding lines over his forearms.

Some of the tattoos were magical, and a few of them were symbols that Qingying recognized as allegiances to old-style wizarding groups dedicated to the Dark Arts, but which were tastefully obscured by newer, more benign images. (Unfortunately, magical tattoos could never wholly be removed or covered up as traditional ones could.)

"Ah, morning!" the person they could only assume to be Bowes gave the trio a wave. "A little lost, are we?"

Qingying found it sort of odd that the first thing he would assume from one adult and two kids at his doorstep was that they were lost.
He glanced at Patience, and then smiled at the man.
“We’re looking for Freddie Bowes.”

Lane was just staring at him.

Well let's just say Qingying acknowledged the possible worst in people even as he treated them with sincerity.

"Sure," he smiled. "That would be lovely."

Patience darted in quickly as soon as Bowes stepped out of the threshold, prompting the ex-auror to whirl around, eyes slightly wide. "Fast little bugger, huh?" he chortled good-naturedly as he meandered slowly around the kitchen island to the metal pot of tea whistling on the stove. He was rotund, and it certainly showed in his small house interior, but it appeared to be more muscle than fat. Stacks of wood were piled up high along the walls and an axe rested beside it, fresh wood clippings peeling off the sharpened edge. "So, what can I do you for?"

Qingying didn't care at all about Bowes at this moment and just made sure to keep Patience in sight.

Uh, well, he was still waiting for an answer and he gazed curiously at Qingying over his shoulder as he dropped a bag into three mugs and delicately poured boiling water over them. Patience picked up a rolled up newspaper and unfurled it, holding it out to Bowes as he migrated to the man's side. "What's this?" he wondered, opening it up. The article in plain sight held a depiction of him, confident and empowered while he spoke to a Daily Prophet reporter. "You're here about the article?" his eyebrows arched.

Oh good. As long as Patience didn't run off somewhere.

"Mhm," Qingying replied with a bright smile. "I see your son likes brooms?"

"Oh yeah. I see you're in Slytherin as well," he noted Patience's green and silver lined robes, approving. "Zane's a Snake, too. Plays for the Seventh Year team at Hogwarts, in fact. He's the captain!" he boasted proudly, but with a charming sort of genuineness that wasn't common amongst older-generation Slytherins: he wasn't putting down anyone else in the process. Patience blinked up at him, perhaps in acknowledgment, or maybe nothing at all.

As a younger boy was in the photo they’d seen at the library, that photo was likely old. Unless Freddie had another son.

Even back when Laurie was still in school, Qingying maintained an awareness of the students, keeping an eye on ones with certain needs, and a mental collection of those with particular interests (whether because they had potential or because their interests were unusual ones), competence in an area, difficulties, and goals. Sometimes, when truly down or stuck, they found a page or parcel, assisting them or pointing them in the right direction, without ever knowing whence it came. Throughout his years, no matter what school he taught at, he always tried to get to know each student. At Hogwarts, this remained the same – and of course, he was more familiar with students in Slytherin.

While he hadn’t been able to attend the Quidditch trials as they had taken place before his arrival, he’d gone to watch practices and also the match in November.

“Zane. I see,” Qingying’s smile grew wider. “He certainly deserves that position.” While he definitely would have enjoyed continuing this conversation, Qingying reminded himself that someone was about to die. He indicated the article containing Belfry Carrower’s execution on Lane’s newspaper. “I was wondering if you could tell us anything about this.”

"Oh, what, the Carrower case?" Bowes blinked. "Uh, I'm afraid I don't know anything other than what's been printed. 'Cept rumors, of course. Can't say if they're true or not, but I know what it's like to be in that position if they are. What's wrong is wrong, no changing that, but does he deserve to die? No. I mean, that's only considering those rumors are true."

Lane looked at him thoughtfully as he spoke. "What rumors?" he kept his voice even.

"Word is he blasted those muggles to protect some folks. Apparently they were a real bad sort. That's how it happens, sometimes. Muggles find out the truth about us, you have the Salem Witch Trials all over again. Some of my old contacts at the Ministry once hinted there may've been kids involved. It's hard not to react viscerally. You know that muggles have all kinds of different methods to interpret the law? One've 'em's related to state of mind and intention. Crime like that would fall under crime of passion, in my opinion."
